What is a Normal Testosterone Level for Men?
As men move into middle age, their energy and libido levels decrease. A medically aware man will start to realize that his testosterone level is probably decreasing. At some level that decrease is completely natural; however, the money question is — are my levels normal? While medical tests exists to determine how much testosterone is in your blood, the results of such a test may be confusing. What is really a ‘normal’ testosterone level?
The first confusion is that two types of testostorone levels are discussed (often loosely) – free testosterone and total testosterone. The NIH places the range of normal free testosterone levels for men from 300 ng/dl to 1000 ng/dl. The normal total testosterone levels range from 250 ng/dl to 1200 ng/dl. Obviously, a “normal” testosterone level varies by age and also from man to man. In one study, the average testosterone levels ranged from the high 668 nanograms per deciliter of blood (ng/dl) in a young man to the low 300 ng/dl in older men. Another article notes that the normal testosterone levels can range from 250 ng/dl to 800 ng/dl. This wide range of “normal” levels should give men two insights.
- While a man may have ‘normal’ testosterone levels, the man may have experienced a significant drop within that normal range.
- Most men can likely increase their testosterone levels within the ‘normal’ range so as to have more energy and increase their libido.
What Does the Normal Range Mean for You?
Imagine a situation where a man is at the low-end of the normal range (between 300 and 500 ng/dl). Fortunately, the man is not at a level that most doctors would prescribe testosterone replacement. However, the man may have been feeling low on energy and libido given perhaps a drop from 600-700 ng/dl. For this man and for many men, the question is how to move from low-normal testosterone levels to high-normal testosterone levels.
The Solution
The good news is that men can increase testosterone levels naturally. The bad news is that if a man is on a downward testosterone trend, the man may have trouble breaking out of it. The truth is that testosterone levels increase energy and libido which encourages men to be more active which in turn increases testosterone levels more which then creates more activity. On the other hand, a decreasing testosterone level will sap a man’s energy and libido which will result in less activity which results in even a lower testosterone level. At Elevate-T, we call this downward trap the Testosterone Death Spiral.
For many middle age men, the challenge then is to break out of this Testosterone Death Spiral. Without a certain ‘normal’ level of testosterone, a man may find it hard to find the energy to work out or to have sex. When this happens, a natural testosterone booster supplement may help a man boost both his energy and testosterone levels naturally. Once the levels of testosterone are increased, the cycle can be reversed. As a man creates more testosterone in his body, he will find it easier to have the energy to work out and have an increased sex drive. These new habits will continue to boost the testosterone production, resulting in a happier, healthier man.
